End of NaNoWriMo + Birthday trip to Chicago!

Last Thursday, December 2, my library hosted its final National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) event. We had a guest author, Barbara Shoup, speak about revisions and the publishing process. She also answered questions from the audience about various aspects of writing, revising, and publishing. Barbara is a great speaker, and I met her earlier this year when she visited my YA lit class. She has published several novels and has co-authored two books on the creative process. She's the Executive Director of the Writer's Center of Indiana. You can read more about her and her books here.

It was a great evening! We served cake and punch to all of our NaNoWriMo participants and celebrated the fact that 7 of them completed the 50,000 word challenge! We received some great feedback from the program surveys - maybe we'll do something similar next year too. It was a great month at the library!

I spent the weekend in Chicago to celebrate my 26th birthday. My boyfriend and I went along with another couple. We visited The Museum of Science & Industry, Shedd Aquarium, and The Art Institute of Chicago. I've been to the first two places, but it was my first trip to the art museum. I don't think anyone else was excited to go there, but I have been wanting to go for years and was determined to make it happen on this trip! We also went up to the top of the Willis Tower and the John Hancock Tower. I prefer the views from Hancock myself.

Birthday desert #1 - Fried ice cream from Su Casa
Second birthday desert at Rosebud. It was called "complimentary birthday cake" but it cost $2.50. Hmm...
Winter wonderland! Building a snowman before hitting up the museums

Tiny snowmen!
The city is beautiful in the snow...but it was freezing!
Looking over "the ledge" on top of Willis Tower. I was too scared to stand on the glass!

Brrrrrrr.

Hope you had a great weekend, too! Happy reading :)
